The Edit
Gather. Around one million years ago, early humans gathered around campfires to socialize, create warmth, share with each other and seek safety from predators. As societies progressed, we created new public gathering places like gardens, libraries, community centers + parks. These spaces foster a sense of connection, reduce isolation and help create a shared identity and pride in where you live. And when you take pride in something, you take care of it.
In modern day society, we have established online gathering spaces like social media platforms + forums, where like minded individuals can share ideas. Though these can be great tools for connection, gathering in person allows us to connect with others organically and grow stronger bonds, helping us to feel less alone. I think we all can agree that we do way better together than alone. Though at times, it can feel easier and safer to isolate yourself, socializing helps our mental + physical health immensely. When I’m having a bad day, just a simple hello or smile from a stranger lifts my spirits and gifting someone that special moment is even more rewarding.
Design Inspiration
Design Tip 1:
Benjamin Moore’s Ashwood Moss - No. 1484 - is described as “a deep graphite-green suggestive of a dark, veiled forest.” This rich color brings the outdoors in + establishes a sense of calm and groundedness, making it a great match for neutrals or vibrant colors. Ashwood Moss is a sophisticated alternative to a more typical green; why not try something different?
Design Tip 2:
There are many things to consider when hosting - linens, centerpieces, music, menu - the list goes on + on. Here are a few tips you may not have thought of. Open but connecting layouts are great for entertaining, especially when they include the kitchen, which is often the epicenter of the event. Utilize your kitchen island as a hub for serving drinks + displaying appetizers, while establishing a designated prep zone to keep things organized. Use warm lighting to set an inviting mood and have plenty of seating options. And if you can, try bringing the party outdoors. At the end of the day, your home should reflect whatever hosting means to you, a cozy movie night in with the family or an elegant dinner party.

Mind
Humans are social creatures who thrive on connection. One of the longest studies on happiness + adult life was completed by Harvard researchers over an 80 year period. The study revealed something pretty amazing. Contrary to what you may think, it is not money, fame or success, but the amount and quality of close relationships in one’s life that contributes most to human wellbeing, happiness and longevity.
According to studies, people with strong social bonds have a 50 percent increased likelihood of survival compared to those who have less social connections. Loneliness increases the risk of chronic disease + weakens the immune system. While gabbing with your close friends or even strangers has the opposite effect. Now that is a strong incentive to take care of your friendships!
If you’re not sure where to start, consider joining a class, club or group activity. Your brain will stay sharp as a result, but you may also meet your new best friend or discover your new favorite hobby.
